Academic Advising
The Sass Academic Coordinators follow the direction of the departmental
advisors when working with the student-athletes. Student-athletes
start working with their SASS Coordinator after they have completed
their freshman or transfer orientation at NIU. SASS Coordinators help
student-athletes with class scheduling to help ensure those classes
will not conflict with their teams practice time. Student-athletes
are allowed to register early on NIUs campus. This guarantees
them class schedules that allow them to balance both their academic
and athletic time commitments. It is important that Student-Athletes
meet with their departmental advisors and SASS Coordinator each semester.
Academic Monitoring
Progress reports are sent out to the professors for all of the student-athletes
classes. Reports are sent during the 5th and 10th week of each semester
and information is shared with the student-athletes and their coaches.
SASS Coordinators will also call instructors periodically to check
the academic status of the student-athletes. Meetings between SASS
Coordinators and the more underprepared student-athletes
are held each week to help monitor academic progress.3
Eligibility Monitoring
The SASS Staff work closely with NIUs Registration and Records
department and the Athletic Compliance staff to monitor the eligibility
status of the student-athletes. SASS Academic Coordinators receive
eligibility reports from Registration and Records periodically that
enable them to stay on top of eligibility issues.
